Wessex Internet has a granted permit to shut Rodden Row, the road through the middle of the village, for twelve days from 28 September. The village found out by letter about a week ago. That's notice, not consultation. We've had no chance to ask whether it could be done under traffic lights, at night, or in a quieter month, and nobody has said what happens to the bus. Here's the evidence, the rules they're meant to follow, and exactly who to put it to.
I'm not able to post in the village WhatsApp group, so this page is how I'm getting it in front of people. If someone forwarded you the link, that's why. Please pass it on, into the group, to your neighbours, to anyone with a shop or a B&B. It's not how I'd have chosen to do it, but the road shuts either way.

Dorset Council says it is "legally required to advertise any planned closures lasting more than five consecutive calendar days in the local area press." We searched the Public Notice Portal, where those adverts are published, and found nothing for Rodden Row or Abbotsbury.
Chesil Bank Parish Council's news page has the 20mph consultation and the tennis court. Nothing about a 12-day closure of the main road through Abbotsbury.

Residents did get a letter from Wessex Internet, but only around the second week of September, under three weeks before a twelve-day closure. Dorset's guidance requires the letter drop, and it happened. What it doesn't do is make a letter into a consultation: nobody was asked anything, and the letter is the first the village heard of it. Dorset requires advance signs at the roadside at either end, two weeks before (14 September). Have you seen one on Rodden Row? Say so below, a photo helps.
Wessex Internet holds the Project Gigabit contract for Dorset and South Somerset (Lot 14.02), funded by Building Digital UK. Public money carries a higher expectation of community engagement, not a lower one.

"Planned situations require at least 3 months' notice" before restrictions take effect. When was this application submitted?
Applicants must "notify residents, business and stakeholders directly affected by restrictions, by means of a letter drop", with "particular attention" to schools and businesses. The village got one, about a week ago. Did the school? Did every business?
Dorset's restrictions guidance says "two weeks prior" at either end; its roadworks guide says "at least one week before the closure". Either way: are they up?

Not a legal duty, but the standard set two years ago on this same road corridor: a diversion agreed with First Bus, a funded shuttle, direct contact with businesses. Where's the equivalent?

Abbotsbury has one road through it. Every time someone shuts it, the village is on its own. This is the log so far.

Fibre ducting along village streets is usually done in short sections under temporary traffic lights. Why is Rodden Row getting a full twelve-day closure?
Keep the village open in the day, work in the evenings, or split it into two or three shorter closures. Was any of this considered?
The lanes round Abbotsbury are single-track for long stretches. In 2024 they jammed with diverted traffic and it was dangerous for walkers, cyclists and horses. What's the signed diversion, and what stops a repeat?
What's the guaranteed finish date, what happens if it overruns, and who answers to the village if it does?
Emergency vehicles, carers, deliveries: is there a way through at all times, and who's managing it on site?

Twelve emails from twelve businesses are good. One letter signed by every business in the village, handed to the council and the press together, is better. If you run a business in Abbotsbury, or work in one, come and sort it out in one sitting: agree what we're asking for, who signs, who talks to the paper, and who goes to the parish council on 5 October.

Ask for the order, the date it was applied for, where it was advertised, and what the permit conditions say about notifying residents. No answer? Formal complaint, then the Local Government Ombudsman.
Elected to speak for Abbotsbury at the council that signed this off. Ask her to get answers from the Traffic Team and push for a shuttle bus.
Next meeting is too late
Full Council doesn't meet until Monday 5 October, 7pm, Strangways Hall, day eight of the closure. So: now, email the clerk asking the council to object in writing before 28 September, without waiting for a meeting. Then on 5 October, turn up and ask what was done, what Wessex Internet said, and how they'll stop it happening this way again.

Checked September 2026 against recent reviews and the businesses' own pages. The Swannery closes for winter at the end of October. 28 September to 9 October is the tail of its season, when the village still gets walkers, day-trippers and the autumn crowd. Shut the road in February and few would notice. Shut it now and every business on this page loses the last real fortnight of trade before the quiet months.
Autumn is one of the busiest times of year for anglers on Chesil Beach. The tackle shop on Rodden Row opens at half seven, seven days a week, for exactly this. Cutting off its road for twelve days in October is about the worst fortnight they could have picked.
Schools are in. Every family doing a school run out of Abbotsbury, and every bus-dependent teenager, has to do it around a closed road for two working weeks.
A full twelve-day closure of the through road is the heaviest option on the table. Nobody has explained to the village why it's needed, or why shorter sections under traffic lights weren't possible.
